Wrist Fracture Aftercare – Here’s What You Should Do

A wrist fracture, or simply a broken wrist, is a condition in which one or more bones of the wrists have a crack or break. There are many reasons why people obtain broken wrists.

The most common reason is attempting to prop and catch the body during a fall. Unfortunately, the wrist is not strong enough to support the body weight, breaking the wrists.

Another reason is motorcycle and bicycle accidents, where the person also tries to catch himself after being dismounted or falling off the bike. And, of course, the last reason is sports.

A wrist fracture can be painful. It even increases the risk of arthritis, which may need wrist arthritis treatment. But with proper aftercare, you can restore your wrist’s strength and range of motion.

Here are some aftercare tips for broken wrists:

1. CASTS AND SPLINTS

Casting and splinting have two primary objectives. The first one is to immobilise the injury. People tend to move their wrists a lot, and movements can slow down the healing. Much worse, it could lead to more complications. Hence, wrapping casts and splits on the injured wrists immobilise the wrists, giving them more space to heal.

The second purpose is to ensure bone and ligament alignment. The broken bones must be properly aligned when attempting to connect them. Movements mess with the alignment, therefore, hinders the healing.

2. REST, ICE, AND ELEVATE

At home, your doctor may instruct you to rest, ice, and elevate your wrist with a fracture or TFCC injury in Singapore. Resting prevents any unnecessary movements and pressure on the wrists.

On the other hand, ice can help decrease swelling. You can do it for 15-30 minutes every two hours.

Meanwhile, elevation also helps reduce pain and swelling. Try to prop your hand over a pillow stack when sitting and lying down. Make sure it is above the heart’s level.

3. PAIN MEDICATION

Excruciating pain is typical in the first few days of the injury. You can reduce it by taking over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen. However, before doing so, make sure to consult your doctor first.

These medications may have an adverse effect, especially for those with heart disease, kidney disease, and stomach ulcers. Avoid giving these medications to children without the doctor’s advice.

4. CHECK-UP

You may still need to visit your doctor and undergo X-rays even if your wrist starts to heal. It is to ensure that the bones are healing right.

In addition to check-ups, you may need physical therapy to restore the strength and range of motion of your broken wrists.

With proper aftercare, you can ensure that your wrists will return to normal sooner than expected.
