Anti aging hand cream: keeping the backs of your hands younger

Why hands show age early and the sunscreen, creams and habits that protect them

  • SPF on hand backs
  • Rich cream at night
  • Retinol optional
  • Reviewed 8 Nov 2026

The most useful anti aging hand cream is one with broad spectrum SPF that you put on the backs of your hands every morning, because hands catch sun on every drive, walk and school run and show it early as spots and thin, crinkled skin. At night a richer cream, and if you like a gentle retinol, does the repair work.

Hands also get washed and sanitised many times a day, which strips oils and leaves them dry. So a hand plan has three parts: sun protection, frequent moisturising and a little targeted treatment. Here is how to put it together.

At a glance

  • Most important step

Sunscreen on the tops of the hands daily, reapplied after washing when you are outdoors.
  • Daytime cream

A non greasy cream with SPF, or a plain cream plus a separate sunscreen.
  • Night cream

Rich moisturiser with ceramides, glycerin or urea; optional low strength retinol a few nights a week.
  • For spots

Sunscreen first; retinoids and vitamin C may fade them slowly. A doctor should check any changing spot.
  • Results

Softer hands in days, smoother texture and lighter spots over months.

Why hands show age so early

Several things add up. The tops of the hands get sun almost every day, often without protection. Skin there is fairly thin, and with age it loses some of the fat underneath, so veins and tendons can show more. Frequent washing removes natural oils. MedlinePlus notes that age spots tend to appear on sun exposed areas, part of the usual ageing changes in skin.

A simple day and night hand plan

  1. Morning: after your face sunscreen, spread a pea to almond sized amount over the tops of the hands and between the fingers.
  2. During the day: after each wash, pat dry and apply a little plain hand cream. Outdoors, reapply sunscreen as well.
  3. Chores: wear gloves for washing up and cleaning products, and warm gloves in cold wind.
  4. Night: a thicker cream, or a retinol hand cream on a few evenings each week to begin.
  5. Very dry hands: once or twice a week, apply a rich layer and wear cotton gloves to bed.
Keep a tube of hand cream with SPF in the car or bag. The backs of your hands get a lot of sun through the side window while driving.

Retinol anti aging hand cream: is it worth it

Retinoids are the best studied anti-aging topical, and hands are no exception in principle. A retinol hand cream, or your face retinoid spread thinly on the tops of the hands, may smooth texture and gradually lighten sun spots over several months. Pace it just as you would on the face.

  • Use it at night only, and on hands that are dry and not freshly cracked.
  • Begin with two nights weekly, three at most.
  • Wash it off your fingertips if you wear contact lenses or rub your eyes.
  • Wear sunscreen on the hands the next day; retinoids make skin more sun sensitive.
Do not use retinoid creams while pregnant or trying to conceive. People with hand eczema or psoriasis should ask a dermatologist before using actives on their hands.

Fine lines on hands and other worries

Fine crinkled lines on the tops of the hands come mostly from sun and dryness. Moisturising makes them look softer within days. A retinoid helps texture over months, and sunscreen stops further damage. If your knuckles and palms are deeply lined, that is often normal skin folding and does not signal ageing.

For deeper changes, clinic options exist. Laser and light treatments or chemical peels can lighten spots. Some fillers are used to restore volume in the tops of the hands. Book any of them with a doctor or licensed clinician who has proper training; see collagen treatments for an overview.

Hand and foot cream: can one do both

Yes, a rich urea or lactic acid cream suits both rough heels and dry hands. Feet usually need a stronger urea content for thick skin, and hands may find that too much on a daily basis. Use the same cream at night on both if it feels comfortable, and keep an SPF cream for the tops of the hands by day.

The AAD's sunscreen buying advice explains what broad spectrum and water resistant mean, which matters for a product you will reapply after washing.

For face products that go with this, see anti-aging cream and the anti-aging routine.

When to see a doctor about your hands

This is general information, not a diagnosis. See a doctor about any spot on the hands that is new, growing, bleeding, itchy or uneven in colour, about cracks that will not heal, or about a rash that keeps returning after washing. Hand eczema is common in people who wash often and may need a prescription cream.

Questions people ask

Best anti aging hand cream: what should it contain?

By day, a hand cream with SPF 30 plus and a broad spectrum label, then a richer cream with ceramides or urea at night. A retinol hand cream is a useful extra for spots and texture. Choose fragrance free if your hands crack.

Does a retinol anti aging hand cream work?

Retinoids may smooth texture and slowly fade sun spots on the hands, as they do on the face. Results take several months and need daily sunscreen alongside. Start on a few nights a week.

How do I get rid of fine lines on my hands?

Moisturise after every wash, use a retinoid at night and protect the tops of the hands from sun. Dryness lines fade quickly; sun damage takes months to improve. Clinic treatments can help more stubborn changes.

Can a face cream double as an anti aging cream for hands?

Yes. Face creams with retinol or SPF work on hands too. Hands often need a thicker, more protective layer, so you may use more or add a plain hand cream on top.

Is an anti aging hand and foot cream a good idea?

A urea or lactic acid cream can help both. Feet usually need it stronger than hands. Keep a separate SPF hand cream for daytime.
