Anti aging night cream: what to put on before bed

Day cream versus night cream, the best night actives and picks for each skin type

  • Retinoid at night
  • SPF by day
  • By skin type
  • Reviewed 6 Nov 2026

An anti aging night cream is worth having if it carries a retinoid or if your skin is dry enough to need a richer layer overnight; otherwise your daytime moisturiser, minus the SPF, does the same job. Night is when you can use ingredients that dislike sunlight and textures too heavy to wear under makeup.

The day cream has one job above all, protecting you from ultraviolet light. The night cream has a different one, supporting repair and delivering actives. Here is how to choose each, what to look for by skin type, and why homemade versions are riskier than they look.

At a glance

  • Quick verdict

Night: retinoid plus moisturiser, or a cream that contains both. Day: moisturiser with broad spectrum SPF 30 or above.
  • Best night actives

Retinoids first; peptides, niacinamide and ceramides as support.
  • How often

A retinoid night cream starts on 2 or 3 nights a week; a plain repair cream can go on nightly.
  • Results

Comfort overnight; fine line change after 3 to 6 months on a retinoid.
  • Avoid if

Pregnant or trying to conceive (retinoids). Patch test if sensitive.

Anti aging day cream and night cream side by side

How the two creams differ
Day creamNight cream
Main jobProtect from sun and pollution, keep skin comfortableDeliver actives, reduce overnight water loss
Key ingredientBroad spectrum sunscreen filters, antioxidantsRetinoids, peptides, ceramides
TextureLighter, sits under makeupOften richer, can feel slightly greasy
Ingredients to avoid in itRetinoids (they break down in light)Sunscreen is wasted at night
Can one replace the otherA day cream without SPF can double as night creamA night cream is no substitute for sunscreen

A combined day and night cream sold as one product usually has no SPF and no retinoid, so it works as a moisturiser at both times. That is fine, as long as you add sunscreen each morning.

What makes a good anti aging night cream

Retinoids

The ingredient most worth paying for in a night product. You can buy retinol without a prescription; tretinoin is the stronger prescription version. MedlinePlus has a plain language tretinoin topical information page that lists side effects and precautions. Retinoids break down in daylight, which is the main reason they belong in the evening.

Repair and comfort ingredients

Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids rebuild the barrier. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid hold water. Petrolatum or shea butter seal it in. These matter more as skin gets drier with age and after menopause.

Helpers

Peptides show small effects in mostly small trials. Niacinamide supports the barrier and may make a retinoid easier to tolerate. Bakuchiol is a gentler plant option with a handful of small trials.

Using a retinoid serum? Then a completely plain night cream is all you need on top. Spending more on the cream adds little.

Starting a retinoid night cream without the peeling

Most people who abandon a retinoid night cream do so in the first fortnight. Pace it like this.

  1. Fortnight one: two non consecutive nights, a pea-sized amount over the whole face.
  2. Fortnight two: three nights, still never two in a row.
  3. Weeks five to eight: alternate evenings, with a plain cream on the gaps.
  4. After that: nightly only if your skin stays calm; many people happily stay at alternate nights.

If you sting, put a plain moisturiser on first, then the retinoid cream. Keep it off the eyelids, nostrils and lip corners. Sunscreen the next morning is a must.

Pregnancy, plans to conceive and breastfeeding all call for a pause on retinoid night creams; your doctor can suggest alternatives.

Do you need a night serum as well

Not usually. A night serum and a night cream can do the same job. Pick one of these combinations, not all of them.

  • Retinoid serum, then a plain night cream.
  • A retinoid night cream on its own.
  • On rest nights, a hydrating or niacinamide serum under a plain cream.

See our anti-aging serum guide for which serum actives are worth adding and which clash.

Homemade night cream: what to know first

Recipes for homemade anti-aging night cream usually blend oils, butters, aloe and sometimes lemon, honey or essential oils. They can feel lovely, but they carry real risks.

  • No preservative. Anything containing water, aloe or fresh ingredients can grow bacteria or mould within days.
  • Citrus juice on skin plus sunlight can cause a blistering burn and dark marks.
  • Essential oils are a frequent cause of allergic rashes.
  • No actives. A homemade cream can moisturise, but it has nothing comparable to a retinoid.

A safer home option is a plain balm of shea mixed with an everyday plant oil, with no water, made in small amounts. It is a moisturiser, nothing more. Which kitchen ingredients are safe is covered in natural anti-aging remedies.

When to use anti aging cream, day or night

Use creams with sunscreen in the morning and creams with retinoids or acids in the evening. Plain moisturising creams work at either time. A cream labelled paraben free is not safer by default: common parabens are permitted at set limits in the EU and US, and the EU has banned a few less studied ones. If you react to a preservative, a dermatologist can patch test you to find the culprit.

Questions people ask

What is the best night cream for anti aging and glowing skin?

Retinoid night creams have the deepest research base for texture and fine lines, and smoother texture also reflects light better. Pair it with a vitamin C serum and sunscreen in the morning for a brighter look. Choose the texture by skin type.

Is an anti aging night cream good for oily skin?

Yes, if it is a light gel or lotion. Look for a retinoid or adapalene and niacinamide, and avoid heavy butters. Some oily skins do fine with just a retinoid serum and no cream at all.

What should I use as an anti aging day cream?

Pick a day lotion that lists SPF 30 or higher and says broad spectrum, or wear any plain lotion under a separate sunscreen. Vitamin C serum underneath adds antioxidant support. Keep retinoids for the evening.

Can I make a homemade night cream for anti aging?

A simple water free balm of shea and a few spoonfuls of jojoba or sunflower oil will moisturise. Avoid recipes with lemon, essential oils or fresh ingredients without preservatives. Homemade creams do not contain retinoids, so they will not change fine lines much.

Can I use my day cream at night?

Yes, if it has no SPF it works fine as a night moisturiser. Sunscreen at night does nothing useful. Plenty of people keep one plain cream for morning and evening, adding a retinoid serum after dark.

Which night cream works best for wrinkles and fine lines?

One that contains a retinoid, used on a slow schedule for several months. For dry skin, choose a rich base; for oily skin, a gel. Clinic care is usually needed for deep creases too.
